A Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court judge has ruled Abdul Awkul should not be executed because he is mentally incompetent. Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles reports.
Abdul Awkul was convicted of the 1992 killing of his estranged wife and brother-in-law in a Cleveland Courthouse as the couple was preparing to go through divorce proceedings.
A Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court ruled Friday that Awkul should not be executed because he is mentally incompetent.This ruling comes just one week after Governor John Kasich ordered a last minute reprieve just hours before Awkul was set to die.
Last month, the Ohio Parole board recommended against clemency even though his attorneys argued he is so mentally ill that he believes the CIA is trying to execute him.
