Anti-poverty activists are asking Ohioans to spend this workweek with 23 dollars for food for all five days. Phil Cole with the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies explains those who take the food stamp challenge have about $1.54 to spend per meal.
Cole says this morning, his dog ate the sandwich he’d made for his lunch – which he says reminded him that people on food stamps usually can’t afford replace food that’s lost or ruined. 1.75 million
Ohioans received food stamp benefits last year; the average recipient got 140 dollars a month, or $4.62 per day. Cole says cuts to the federal program are being debated, so he hopes people will take the challenge to see what’s it’s like to live on the benefit that’s provided now.
