Cuyahoga County Dems Start Picking Candidate to Endorse for Prosecutor

The actual election for the post of Cuyahoga County Prosecutor is not until next year, but the five men vying for the endorsement of the local Democratic party has been going on for months. The list includes attorneys Subodh Chandra and James McDonald and Cleveland city councilman Kevin J. Kelley. There are two former judges in the race as well: retired Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McGinty and former Cleveland Municipal Court Judge and later Cleveland city Law Director Robert Triozzi.

Tonight the five will meet with city and ward leaders. Outgoing prosecutor Bill Mason has decided not to seek a fourth term. The democratic party endorsement has traditionally been significant in all Cuyahoga County races says Geoffrey Mearns, provost for Cleveland State University and former dean of Cleveland-Marshall College of law. But Mearns says the indictment of former Cuyahoga County Democratic Party head Jimmy Dimora on corruption charges may have dimmed the glow of a party endorsement especially for a candidate that is seeking a position in law enforcement.

Geoffrey Mearns: My sense is the voting public are a bit less inclined than were to support the endorsed candidates than they might have been.

Local democrats could decide who to endorse by early December for the March party primary election OR they could decide to endorse no one. No word yet on whether the Republicans will field any candidates for next November's election.
