Field Of Candidates In Cuyahoga Races Crowded

There's just over a week to go before voters in Cuyahoga County elect party candidates to fill brand new seats created after the passage of a new county charter last November. Positions include a county executive to replace the three current county commissioners, and 11 county council members. Ideastream's Bill Rice has this summary of what the field of candidates looks like.

Eight candidates for County Executive are on primary ballots - four Democrats, three Republicans and one Green Party candidate.  Three of the eight, one from each party, will go on to the general election in November, and could be joined on that ballot by as many as four additional candidates running as independents.  Their deadline for turning in petition signatures to the Board of Elections to qualify for the ballot is September 6th - the day before the primary and also Labor Day.

As for the eleven new county council districts - also part of the reform charter - a total of 86 party-affiliated candidates are seeking a seat.  Of those, there is only one Green Party candidate and one Libertarian - the rest are Republicans and Democrats.  Republicans running outnumber democrats in only one district - the sixth, which spans the eastern perimeter of the county.  In two others there are equal numbers of Republican and democratic contenders, and in the rest, more democrats are vying for seats - by a wide margin in some districts.

As with the county executive race, each district has at least one, and some as many as four, independents hoping to be included on the November ballot.

Partisan candidates for county executive will meet together in a candidates’ forum at 5:30 tomorrow at Cleveland State University’s Levin College of Urban Affairs.  It’s open to the public.
