As a part of National Consumer Protection Week, the Ohio Attorney General is spreading the word about con artists. Attorney General Mike DeWine says all too often scammers prey on Ohioans.

Last week six people were indicted as part of an alleged scam ring that bilked senior citizens out of $400,000. These con artists in particular even impersonated DeWine to scare the victims into giving money.

To combat these frauds, DeWine’s office will begin sending informational fliers out with Meals on Wheels programs.

“We plan to put this flier with valuable information about scams and safety tips in the hands of 40,000 seniors in every county in Ohio when they get their meals delivered," DeWine said. "We think education is frankly our best weapon -- best weapon against scam artists because once you hand over or wire money to them, that money is likely gone.”

The attorney general also held a contest so students could create informational videos about scams. The winning entries are now posted on the office’s website.
