Cleveland Throws Its Hat Into Amazon HQ Contest

Officials have until October 19 th to submit an application for Amazon's second headquarters, what would be a massive boost to the region’s economy.

Amazon estimates as many as 50,000 new full-time employees at the facility, its other headquarters will stay in Seattle. The average salary for those jobs – $100,000. Amazon’s investment in the new campus – more than $5 billion.

In their announcement on entering the competition, city and county officials provided no details on potential sites for the headquarters, but said the application will be a collaboration among the city, county, Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, Greater Cleveland Partnership and Cleveland State University.

Amazon has a long list of requirements including a metro area with a population over one million, a building site within thirty miles of downtown with access to mass transit and a stable, business-friendly environment, plus a generous tax incentive package. The plan is for three building phases, over fifteen years at least, with their site selection announcement sometime next year.

In a written statement, Mayor Frank Jackson compared the proposal to the bid for the Republican National Convention. "We were an underdog during that process, yet we won," said Jackson.

The competition for the company’s second headquarters is expected to be intense.
