Phone calls to Ohio’s problem gambling hotline shot up about 30 percent last month. The state’s Casino Control Commission reports the hotline received 408 calls in October, compared to 278 in September. Laura Clemens oversees the project. She says the increase is probably due to the recent opening of a casino on Columbus’ Southside, the opening of a full-scale casino on Columbus' Westside, and the continuation of new casinos in Toledo and Cleveland. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen, Clemens talks about who is calling in to get help with their problem gambling

She says the problem gambling hotline can also refer people to counselors and addiction specialists who charge for their treatment programs. The number for the toll-free hotline is required to be posted prominently at Ohio casinos and racetracks, and that's where most of the callers say they found out about it. The number is 800-589-9966.
