Bill Aims to Make Community Schools More Accountable

Democrats in the Ohio legislature say they will introduce a bill that would require more transparency in charter or "community" schools.

Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 4:01 pm

Representative Joe Schiavone says his legislation would make sure community schools that get public money are accountable for those funds.

"This is very, very simple. We are talking about auditing," said Schiavone. "We are talking about transparency. If you want to go into education in the state of Ohio, you should have to follow all of the rules public schools do. It’s very simple."

The bill would require the state auditor to conduct annual audits of each school operator or sponsor, reviewing only the public funds for private entities. It would also mandate those schools comply with open records laws.
