Ohio voters showed their fondness for the public library yesterday by passing every local library levy on ballots throughout the state.

Tax levies aren’t always popular with Ohio voters, but if they’re for libraries, they are an exception. In fact, the 15 local library levies on Tuesday’s ballot all passed.

Doug Evans is director of the Ohio Library Council, which represents 251 libraries. He says this election’s 100% approval rate follows in the footsteps of other library levies the past few years, when the approval rate wasn’t perfect but was still high.

Evans: “….The message is that majority of the communities throughout the state are willing to provide the financial support that public libraries need to serve their communities.”

The number of local tax proposals to benefit Ohio libraries went up around 2009. That’s when legislators cut back on state aide to libraries.
