July 2009 - Heart Health

On July 1, 2009, the first monthly survey of the year was released. The topic for the month was health, to follow up on heart health programming that aired on ideastream channels in May. ideastream was specifically looking to determine if respondents (most of them audience members of various ideastream services) were able to use the heart health programming to change or add information to their lives.

There were 65 participants in July’s survey. Below are the questions from the survey and selected responses.

Question #1 
Did you view and/or listen to ideastream’s heart health coverage this past May?

Response: Yes, 18; Some, 8; No, 37.

A few of the open-ended replies to this question indicated that people were not aware of the heart health programming. “I wasn’t aware of the program or I would have sought it out,” said one respondent. Other comments included “I did not know about the coverage” and “I wasn’t aware that it was special coverage.”

The second question, illustrated in the graph above, suggests that users of the heart health content have taken steps to better their own lifestyles, most notably exercising and changing diets. Other respondents provided insight into other action steps they have taken in response to ideastream’s health coverage, including one respondent who is “sticking” with a raw food plan and another who will wash hands more often to “avoid flu germs.” One response stated that even though she keeps a healthy diet, doing so means she then has to combat having low levels of sodium in her system.

Question #3 
What do you think the region’s assets are this year?

As illustrated in previous years, the response to this question was varied, but included usual trends: a vibrant arts scene, the environment and Lake Erie, health care systems and low cost of living.

“The willingness to look at some of the problems in our area and FINALLY address them (e.g. county corruption).”

“Nature: CVNP and Lake Erie. Clean them up, publicize them more....they will come!”

“Water, water, water. Lifestyle. Did you see that Money magazine ranked 4 Cleveland Suburbs in the top 100 places to live in the US? No other metro area has as many. At least not within 25 miles of downtown.”

“The various burgeoning local movements. There are a lot of people who live here who are dedicated to this region.”

“I hope to see the lake restored to use by the public and for increased shipping, and I hope we can transition to locally produce goods currently made in China, India, Mexico, etc.”

“We have a great lake in our front yard.”

Question #4 
What do you think the region’s challenges are this year?

It is all about the economy and the loss of local jobs. One or the other of these topics was mentioned in almost every response. Another trend – and this is not surprising given all the attention recently – included county corruption.

“Clean up corruption in conduct of our elected officials.”

“Our challenges are developing an understanding that teaching a man to fish is better than giving him a fish. The challenge of understanding that teaching and education are very different. Teaching is what someone offers to us; education is what we do for ourselves. (This theme is from the book “A Thomas Jefferson Education.") Mentors can help us realize this. Leaders developing Leaders.”

“To develop policies that support sustainable housing, and industry (wind, solar), insulate + winterize homes so we use only half as much energy, develop organic local produce and gardens.”

“Reducing the number of failed mortgages and increasing foreclosures and the skyrocketing credit card default rates.”

“An overall vision of how to improve and make our region great again. We have a total lack of leadership on every level. I fear we have been left with a lack of sufficient intellectual brain power as well as a corrupt city and county government. It’s hard not to feel hopeless. There isn’t even a discussion about the state of our region let alone productive suggestions of how to help it improve.”

“This region faces the same challenge it has faced for many years, reinventing its economy.”

“The obvious answer is the economy, but even that is tied into the region’s difficulty in moving forward from the era of manufacturing.”

“Reducing tobacco use and addressing the problems of obesity with the focus on the dangers of fast food restaurants.”
