Teacher Guide: Materials on website and in kit
A four-hour film produced by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichart, A Lion in the House follows the stories of five children and their families as they confront childhood cancer. The kit (print guide and DVD) is designed for teenagers and their leaders to step in and make a difference through community service or service learning. The kit is divided into four content sections: families, siblings, peers with cancer and medical professionals. Each section has a number of units, which are correlated with national standards ranging in a full curriculum from arts to sciences and health. The sections include related video clips from the film as well as accompanying discussion questions to raise awareness and empathy about the issues. Free online training is available at mylion.org. Training includes an overview of the film, a review of the instructional units contained in the kit and tips on how to guide your students through planning and implementing a community service project. Most activities contained in the guide and the streamed video modules are also available at http://www.mylion.org. Order a free kit at http://www.mylion.org/kit/index.htm.
