America on the Move takes your students on a fascinating journey through the history of the United States from 1876 to 2000, using the lens of transportation. As an accompaniment to the National Museum of Natural History’s newest permanent exhibition, America on the Move explores historical moments, from the coming of the railroad to a California town in 1876 to the role of the streetcar and the automobile in creating suburban communities, to the transformation of a U.S. port by containerized shipping in the 1970s. An extensive museum website provides history, artifacts, games, and full teacher’s guide at http://www.americanhistory.si.edu/onthemove. This program was produced as an electronic field trip in May of 2004. Available through June 30, 2013.
