China Enjoys Lantern Festival on First Full Moon of Lunar New Year

The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Lunar New Year, and is an occasion for family and friends to get together and have fun. In southeast China's Fujiang province, a display had thousands of lanterns in different shapes and colors. In Shanghai, visitors were treated to more modern-looking lanterns that advertised the upcoming World Expo. And in Wuhan, in central China's Hubei province, they held a dragon dance contest, with dance groups and drum-and-gong groups performing and competing.

Oberlin Conservatory of Music Receives National Medal of Arts at White House

President Obama awarded the National Medal of Arts to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at the White House last Thursday. The medal is the highest award given to artists and those who support the arts by the U.S. government. Receiving the award for Oberlin was David Stull, Dean of the Conservatory.

Priceless Artwork Rescued from Rubble of Haitian Art Museum

When Port-au-Prince's most prominent art museum collapsed during the January twelfth earthquake, a major part of Haiti's cultural history was buried in the rubble. With about fifteen thousand works, the Nader Art Museum housed one of the largest collections of Haitian native or primitive art. As soon as the earthquake struck, the gallery staff began the dangerous job of pulling the most valuable works of art from the debris. Last week, a Japanese contingent of U.N. military engineers pitched in to help. The damaged art work is being shipped to New York for restoration.
