Be Well: Kids & Diabetes

Kids & Diabetes

If current trends continue, the incidence of children with type 2 diabetes has the potential to almost quadruple in the next 40 years. And the scary thing is some teens with type 2 diabetes are already having severe complications affecting their hearts, kidneys, and eyes. The statistics and facts are sobering and have experts sounding the alarm to develop better treatments and prevention efforts. Be Well: Kids & Diabetes explores the dangers and issues behind the growing rate of type 2 diabetes among youth. The CEO of the renown Joslin Diabetes Center offers his perspective on this alarming trend and local doctors working on cutting-edge research share their views and insight.

Be Well: Obesity & Cancer

Obesity & Cancer

While most people know obesity can lead to heart attacks and diabetes, the connection between excess fat and certain cancers is a relatively new area of medical research. Obesity not only puts people at risk for developing certain cancers, it also increases their chances of dying from them. One study estimates close to a 100,000 cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained healthy weights. Cancer experts are bracing for a “perfect storm” as the obesity epidemic collides with the aging baby boomer population. Be Well: Obesity & Cancer begins by exploring two cancers that rank at the bottom in terms of public awareness but stand at the top when it comes to their connection with fat. They are endometrial cancer, which is cancer in the lining of the uterus, and esophageal cancer – which is found most commonly in middle-aged white males with big bellies.
