The Church of the SubGenius

The Sound of Applause
Posted May 24, 2000

This year, the cofounder of a very unusual religion set up shop in Cleveland. The Church of the SubGenius has had a following around town for years-nationwide its members number in the thousands. But this church is less about spirit than satire. The Reverend Ivan Stang preaches a message of salvation for the sluggish. (Some call it heresy! Others call it–funny!) Often you'll find him performing with the Church's Un-Official House Band, Einstein's Secret Orchestra. 90.3's April Baer has this profile of Reverend Stang and his do-it-yourself approach to salvation.

On the Road at Oberlin College

The Sound of Applause
Posted May 19, 2000

Our intrepid band of "Around Noon" staffers-Host and Producer Dee Perry, Assistant Producer Dave DeOreo, and Technical Producer/Engineer Jeff Carlton, pulled into the Finney Chapel parking lot at Oberlin College, ready to begin another "on the road" adventure. The idea behind these occasional excursions is to reach out to the show's existing audience (wherever they may be), to discover new listeners in the process, and to get out into the sunshine whenever possible!

40 Years with Peter, Paul & Mary

The Sound of Applause
Posted April 6, 2000

For those of us old enough to remember, it's hard to believe that Peter, Paul and Mary are on the road to celebrate their fortieth anniversary. Back when the trio first hit the charts in 1961, the wave of folk music was riding high on college campuses, and coffee houses. The Weavers and the Kingston Trio had already made their mark on the record buying public, and anyone that picked up a guitar had a chance to be heard at a hootenanny. Peter, Paul and Mary came to Cleveland on April 7th to get the 40th anniversary tour underway. 90.3 WCPN's Jim Goldurs spoke with Peter Yarrow about the early days of the group.

Liza Lou: Bead the World

The Sound of Applause
Posted March 9, 2000

Everyone wants their backyard to be a colorful place where they can hang out and enjoy the good weather. But no one's backyard can compare to artist Liza Lou's. While she's got the picnic table, the charcoal grill and the laundry line, Lou's backyard has got something no other backyard has got - beads. Hundreds upon thousands of beads - yellow, green, blue, red and gold beads everywhere. Literally everywhere! From the corn on the cob to the garden hose everything is decorated with Lou's beaded trademark. And now it's all part of a new exhibition and exciting show at the Akron Art Museum - "Liza Lou: Bead the World" on view through Sunday, May 28. Around Noon host Dee Perry recently had a chance to talk with this unique artist.
