The Road to Reform
The Sound of Ideas: Tuesday, February 9, 2010
By this time next year, Cuyahoga County will be just weeks into an entirely new form of government: an executive and council which will replace the current county commissioners and most other county-wide elected offices. It's a transition that some say will create the second most powerful officeholder in the state, and those leading it have already called for a 15 percent spending cut and engaged a thousand volunteers to help flesh out the change. Tuesday morning at 9 join host Dan Moulthrop for a conversation with some of those steering the biggest local government overhaul in the state's history.

Upside/Downside: The Underemployed
Regional News Stories: Thursday, February 4, 2010
Every month, the government comes out with its unemployment numbers. They've been hovering around the 10% mark for some time now. But there's a whole other group who are holding on to work by a thread.
These are the so-called underemployed. They might have had their hours reduced, work part time, or maybe they're on contract. They're doing what they can to stay in their industry. But ideastream®'s Dan Bobkoff reports that this group has never been bigger.
Reporters’ Roundtable
The Sound of Ideas: Thursday, February 4, 2010
As filing deadlines approach in statewide races, Ohio's Democrat and Republican parties change the lineup, while lawmakers and petitioners line up their issues for this year's ballots. Meanwhile, Cleveland's mayor points to an overhaul in city hall. And to some major problems in a local mortgage assistance program. Thursday morning at 9, join host Dan Moulthrop and a panel of journalists for analysis of those stories, plus NASA Glenn's new mission and payback from PNC.

Ohio Receives $400 Million Stimulus Grant for High Speed Rail Corridor
NewsDepth: Wednesday, February 3, 2010
Governor Strickland learned last week that Ohio would receive $400 million to build a new railroad line connecting Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati, part of the Obama administration's $8 billion high-speed rail program. Not exactly high-speed, the Ohio trains are expected to average about forty miles per hour. State officials say the project could create up to 11,000 jobs. Critics say the proposed schedule will be inconvenient, and the project will likely cost more money than it makes.
NASA’s Constellation Program – and Trips to the Moon – Cancelled in Budget
NewsDepth: Wednesday, February 3, 2010
One of the items getting the axe in the President's budget was NASA's Constellation program - the next generation space vehicles after the shuttles are retired. The Ares 1-X rocket was supposed to carry astronauts to the Moon, and perhaps someday to Mars. A lot of the preparations were being done at Ohio's NASA Glenn Research Center. The Constellation program was considered too expensive, and the new budget will provide money to help private companies to develop smaller rockets to carry people to the space station. Also included in the budget is money for science, satellites, robotic exploration and education.
