Live as if you were to die tomorrow.
Learn as if you were to live forever.”
-Gandhi

Unfortunately, growing old can’t be avoided, but aging successfully depends on our genetics, environment, and everyday life.

With the New Year here, people are beginning diets, starting regular exercise routines, and some will try to quit smoking again. Research indicates that “exercise is the single most important component of successful aging,” plus there are several other ways to add healthy years to your life.

Here are just a few tips on Successful Aging:

Take care of your health - eat a healthy diet, exercise to stay fit, and don’t drink too much alcohol.
Keep yourself safe - make your home a safe place, prevent falls, and stay safe in the car.
Take care of your emotional health - keep in touch with your friends and family, exercise your mind, stay involved (volunteer), and keep a positive attitude.
Plan your future - keep track of your money and know your own health.

In the Encyclopedia of Aging, Palmore says that a comprehensive definition of successful aging would combine survival (longevity), health (lack of disability, and life satisfaction (happiness).”

Healthy and successful aging is a daily task that can make a difference to the way you feel and enjoy everyday life.
