Approximately 50,000 Americans have a mini-stroke - or TIA (transient ischemic attack) - every year. And of that, about a third of them will end up having a full blown stroke later in life. There are also other people at risk for strokes due to uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking and high cholesterol levels. While some people take drugs to control these conditions, others opt for more invasive kind of treatments, like carotid endarterectomy surgery, which cleans out the plaque in the artery that is disrupting blood flow to the brain and is performed on about 150,000 Americans a year. ideastream’s Lauren Payden will take a look at the preventative options people have and how those methods can help avert larger strokes in the future.
