Looking for standards-based professional learning? ideastream offers a wealth of professional learning opportunities.

WVIZ/PBS’s Educational Services Department provides a wide array of Professional Learning opportunities to thousands of educators in over 200 school districts in an eleven county area in Northeast Ohio. WVIZ/PBS’s technology training services can be tailored to a district’s needs from novice to the scholar and can be provided in the teaching labs of WVIZ/PBS ideastream, in your school district, or via Distance Learning. WVIZ/PBS provides the availability of graduate credit for workshops that meet university requirements.

Ohio Ready to Learn 2012

Special note: These workshops are held between Jan 2012 – May 2012.

Phase One:  CKC Social and Emotional Development Field Guide: Overview
This workshop looks at the newest of Ohio’s Core Knowledge Early Childhood documents, Guiding Young Children’s Behavior by Supporting Social and Emotional Development, the Field Guide.  Participants will be introduced to the Field Guide’s content, discuss ways to support the social and emotional development of young children, be able to identify appropriate community resources and suggest activities for children to build skills.

Phase Two:  Review of the ASQ:SE (Ages and Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional)
This workshop is an updated version of one presented in 2007. It describes the features of the ASQ:SE and the benefits of developmental screening. Participants will practice scoring the ASQ:SE, review the value of sensitive communication of the screening results and the process for referring children, as well as making suggestions for appropriate follow-up activities.

Phase Three:  Climbing the Competency Ladder in Health and Nutrition
Early childhood professionals have a key opportunity and responsibility to work with families to provide environments and experiences that lead children toward lifelong health and well-being. This workshop examines Ohio’s Core Competencies in Health and Nutrition, and provides practical strategies to raise the level of competency among participants.

Ohio Ready to Learn workshops are FREE and made possible by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Service.

SMART Board Boot Camp (Graduate Credit Available)

This is a hands-on two day session in which you will become immersed in the SMART Board.  Spend a considerable amount of time actually using the SMART Board by doing various exercises.  Many activities will be demonstrated—including projects and lessons that integrate many content standards.  Earn one grad credit through Ashland University for an additional $150.  Session meets on both Feb. 11, and March 10, 2012, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The iPad Academy for Teachers and Administrators (Graduate Credit Available)

Do you have an iPad but are mainly using it for emailing, surfing the web, and taking notes?  Now it’s time to turn your device into a powerful productivity tool.  First we will provide you with an overview of apps ranging from classroom management and subject areas to administrative tools and parent conferences.  Then you will select an App to help you develop a lesson or task to accomplish in this academy.  Your task could include how to capture and report information from a walk around, or developing a presentation on your iPad.  Next you will team with other participants where you will outline your task.  Finally, you will formulate and organize your information by learning how to use in depth three key programs; Google Form, Keynote, and Evernote.  Continue working on your task at home over the next three weeks while meeting with your team via Skype or GoToMeeting your iPad.  Meet one final time to present and receive feedback on your assignment.  You will transform the way you use your iPad at the end of this Academy!  Session meets Sat., Feb. 11, 2012, 8:30am to 3:45pm and Sat., Mar. 10, 2012, 9am to 11am.
*Participants are required to have the own iPad and be familiar with its basic functions.
**One graduate credit available through Ashland University for an additional $150.

Picasa Life Cycle Movie

In this 2.5 hour hands-on professional learning, participants will explore life cycles, along with physical and behavioral characteristics of animals by observing them through web cams. They will create a narrated movie of the observations using animal photographs. A lesson with web cam resources, photos of animals in their habitats, and activity pages for students will be provided. Participants will experience Picasa’s (free web-based software) ease of adding photos, narration, an the ability to access it from all types of computers.  Step Up approved.  Ashland Credit available for additional cost.

Pictionary 3.0 Way Beyond your Basic Dictionary

In this 2.5 hour hands-on professional learning, participants will move beyond rote memorization and bring the fun back to life science by creating digital dictionaries in Picasa or Glogster. Participants will learn how to set up accounts, create, record and edit digital posters and albums to create digital dictionaries.  Step Up approved.  Ashland University credit available for additional cost.
