Program Time: 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
NOTA and WVIZ/PBS will be hosting a special distance learning program on November 11th Veterans Day. The program will feature two retired military veterans men who were directly involved in helping US Diplomats and South Vietnamese refugees escape from Saigon in late April, 1975.
Two of our veterans Commander Hugh Doyle, US Navy and Colonel Gerry Berry, US Marine Corps played key roles during the evacuation.
Colonel Berry piloted the helicopter that carried US Ambassador Graham Martin from the US Embassy to a US ship waiting off the coast of Vietnam.
Commander Doyle was the Chief Engineer on the USS Kirk during the evacuation. The ship and its crew were entirely unprepared for the role they played in accepting refugees from a seemingly unending stream of helicopters.
Both men are featured in “The Last Days in Vietnam” a film produced and directed by Rory Kennedy. The film is currently playing at film festivals and is scheduled to air on WVIZ/PBS in April, 2015.
