Day-of-the Dead Arts Integrated Workshop

Join teaching artist Mark Yasenchack for an arts-integrated workshop that helps students (grades 5−12) translate personal beliefs and ideas into representative symbols. Students will create la cavaleras, contemporary interpretations of la cavalera catrina, ‘the elegant skull,’ a Mexican Day of the Dead folk art tradition.

This workshop exposes students to the traditional crafts of Day of the Dead celebration. It also encourages students to interpret their understanding of family history, ancestors, skeletal structure with symbols to develop a vocabulary of symbols to represent issues and traditions of their own life and family.

PLEASE NOTE Students will need the following materials to fully participate in the activities in this lesson: drawing paper, multi-colored craft paper, magazines, pencils, colored pencils, scissors, glue, paint, stamps and ink pads, and stencils
