1824 Peter Cornelius – German composer, writer on music (d.1874); an arrangement of his The Three Kings for solo voice and choir is included in the first volume of the popular Willcocks and Jacques compilation Carols for Choirs.
1863 Enrique Arbós – Spanish violinist, composer and conductor (d.1939); conducted the first Spanish performance of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, and of Richard Strauss's Don Quixote.
1871 premiere of Giuseppe Verdi's Aïda in Cairo, Egypt; the Metropolitan Opera has given more than 1,100 performances of the opera, making it the second most frequently performed work by the company behind La bohème.
1906 Franz Waxman – Silesian-born American film composer (d.1967); his scores include The Bride of Frankenstein, Rebecca, Stalag 17, Rear Window, Peyton Place, The Nun's Story and Taras Bulba; received 12 Academy Award nominations, and won two Oscars in consecutive years (for Sunset Boulevard and A Place in the Sun).
1950 Libby Larsen – American composer (73 years old); along with Stephen Paulus, she is a co-founder of the Minnesota Composers Forum, now the American Composers Forum which produces Composers Datebook heard on WCLV.
