Growing Talent and Inspiring Innovation with Nature's Wisdom

Biomimicry, the use of nature to solve human problems, represents a revolutionary change in our economy, transforming the ways we think about designing, producing, transporting and distributing goods and services. While the field today is just emerging, in 15 years, some believe biomimicry could represent $300B of the U.S. GDP, provide another $50B from mitigating the depletion of various natural resources and reducing CO2 pollution, and account for 1.6M U.S. jobs.

Under the leadership of the Great Lakes Biomimicry Collaborative (GLBio), Northeast Ohio (NEO) is poised to become the global leader and first-to-market in the biomimicry economy. GLBio is leading efforts to develop the world’s first formally integrated biomimicry education system, develop processes for NEO corporations to teach the application of biomimicry in the development of products and businesses, create a biomimetic Open Innovation Center, and utilize regional and global networks to foster economic development.

Working with GOJO, Parker Hannifin, Ross Environmental, Sherwin-Williams and the University of Akron, among others, GLBio has begun to explore the promise of biomimicry by asking, how would nature solve this problem?

This program will be a panel discussion on biomimicry and its potential importance to the region. The panel will feature:

Rebecca O. Bagley, President & CEO, NorTech (Moderator)
Thomas N. Tyrrell, Serial Entrepreneur, Regionalist, and Founder & CEO, GLBio
Dr. Peter Niewiarowski, Professor of Evolutionary Biology & Integrated Biosciences (IBS); Director, Biomimicry Fellowships, University of Akron
Dr. Ven Ochaya, Director, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability MBA programs, Baldwin Wallace University
