Statehouse News Bureau Receives Democracy in Action Award from the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus

For Immediate Release
Lisa Goss, Communications Specialist, 216/916-6134

May 3, 2016 (Cleveland, OH) – The League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus has announced that the Statehouse News Bureau is a 2016 recipient of a Democracy in Action award from the civic organization. This is the 25th year of Democracy in Action, which, according to a press release from the regional League, “recognizes individuals or organizations for their outstanding participation in civic affairs.”

The League said that this year it has chosen to honor a representative from each of its core programs and that the Statehouse News Bureau—Bureau Chief Karen Kasler and Reporter/Producers Jo Ingles and Andy Chow—“is being honored for good government.”

According to the League’s website, the Democracy in Action award “is given to outstanding citizens who make Central Ohio a more democratic place to live—a place where anyone can take part in the political process.” The Statehouse News Bureau staff members will accept the award May 5 at the LMV Democracy in Action event at the Grange Audubon Center in Columbus.

In addition to producing in-depth news reports for Ohio's public radio stations and moderating political debates and other events, Kasler, Ingles and Chow are regular contributors to "The Sound of Ideas" on 90.3 WCPN ideastream and “Ideas” on WVIZ/PBS ideastream, “Columbus on the Record” on WOSU-TV and “Cincinnati Edition” on WVXU.

The Statehouse News Bureau was founded in 1980 to provide educational, comprehensive coverage of legislation, elections, issues and other activities surrounding the Statehouse to Ohio's public radio and television stations. The Bureau remains the only broadcast outlet dedicated to in-depth coverage of state government news and topics of statewide interest. The Bureau is funded through the Broadcast Educational Media Commission and is managed by ideastream on behalf of Ohio public broadcast stations.
