ideastream Announces New Podcast “The Downtowner”

CLEVELAND, Ohio (June 7, 2018) — Downtown Cleveland is experiencing a population boom. 15,000 people live in the city, up from 10,000 in 2010 and up from nearly 8,000 in 2000. Luxury apartments are opening in repurposed buildings, including the historic Halle Building and The Standard, a former office building near the city's Justice Center. Despite growth downtown, the most recent census data showed a continued drop in population for the Cleveland-Elyria population area, a huge section of Northeastern Ohio encompassing nearly 2,000 square miles.

What is going on here? That is what the new podcast from ideastream, “ The Downtowner,” aims to find out. Hosts Amy Eddings of NPR’s "Morning Edition" on 90.3 WCPN ideastream and lifestyle blogger George Hahn will seek to answer questions, including:

  • Who is moving to downtown Cleveland, and why?
  • Who are the winners and losers of downtown Cleveland's rising residential status?
  • How can the rest of the city benefit from downtown's growing popularity?
  • What is the vision of urban livability in a region where the American dream of a single-family home and a two-car garage has a lot of emotional and political power?

The six-episode pilot series is set to launch on June 14, 2018 with its first episode, “Cleveland, We Have a Confidence Problem” featuring historian and author, Professor J. Mark Souther of Cleveland State University. Audiences can subscribe to "The Downtowner" using their app of choice.

“The opportunity to present and explore the nuances of the changes happening in downtown Cleveland is exciting,” said ideastream President and CEO Kevin Martin. “‘The Downtowner’ allows ideastream to continue experimenting with different podcast offerings and reach subscribers through this increasingly popular digital-forward format.”
